Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented Students

Nene Park Academy is committed to achievement for all, ensuring that every one of our students reach their full potential.  We promote high aspirations through our Gifted and Talented programme and celebrate success throughout the school.

The term ‘Gifted and Talented’ is used to describe students who demonstrate abilities in one or more subject area which is at a level significantly ahead of the majority of their year group, or with the potential to develop those abilities. The ‘gifted’ are those with high ability in one or more academic subject, and the ‘talented’ are those with high ability in sport, music, visual arts and/or performing arts.

Teachers identify and update a register of students who show a particular gift or talent within their curriculum area. They use subject specific criteria to help make their judgements as accurately as possible. This will typically result in 5% of a year group being identified in each area.

Parents/ Carers of students identified as having a particular gift or talent receive a letter indicating their son’s/ daughter’s Gifted and Talented subject(s) and the opportunities available to support them within the school.

At Nene Park Academy, Gifted and Talented activities are varied and range from external trips, competitions and lectures to challenges, workshops and master classes during curriculum time and session 6.  We also provide a weekly Gifted and Talented Mathematics session for 3 of our feeder primary schools.

Within lessons students are given regular opportunities to complete tasks that will stretch all abilities. This may be through the questions the teacher asks, differentiated tasks or open tasks/investigations that allow a range of responses.   Feedback on assessments is given to show students what they need to do to in order to reach the next level.  Following the return of every assessment lesson time is allocated for students to act on the feedback.

Detailed below is a list of some of the key activities and events that our Gifted and Talented students may be involved in during the course of the academic year.  However, we also encourage students who have been identified as Gifted and Talented to investigate opportunities that are available to them outside of the school.  External opportunities for Gifted and Talented students are posted on the school vle and there are further links to G&T websites, which are also shown below.

Finally, it is important to note that students’ potential and abilities are not fixed, and everyone is encouraged to build on the aptitudes they have already shown. Our Gifted and Talented register is therefore reviewed and updated regularly.

Nene Park Academy is committed to ensuring that Gifted and Talented students are recognised, supported, inspired and challenged in order that they maximise their potential and that, as with all our students, their achievements are celebrated.
