Hands-on experiences in a real salon

Tools of the trade for all

Background

The KS4 Hairdressing course is particularly popular to many of our Pupil Premium students. The emphasis is firmly on preparing students for a future career, or to pursue further qualifications.  Encouraging students to develop their customer service skills and professionalism within the salon, with a full commercial salon in operation, students see first-hand what this career choice can offer them.

The problem

Put simply, Pupil Premium students can’t always afford to buy these important pieces of kit – basic tools of the trade, tunics, and their own Head blocks – with the result that their anticipated engagement with the course will be limited and they will not be able to reach their full potential. With the course now delivered in our modern, well-equipped, commercial salon, the kit is crucial to their success.

The Pupil Premium solution

Thanks to Pupil Premium funding, we were able to help students invest in their futures through the purchase of vital practical and practice kits. Pupil Premium students can now develop the skills they would need in a commercial salon, with full access to the course, and every opportunity to achieve their ambitions.

Results

55% of Pupil Premium students passed the course with many considering it as a future career with 44% of students taking a Hair Dressing related qualification at KS5 study.

Building on the Pupil Premium success in 2016-2017

Moving forward, we have identified a number of Pupil Premium students who will benefit from developing basic hairdressing skills at Key Stage 3 to support their success at Key Stage 4; we intend to purchase more kits with Pupil Premium funds so that they too have the support and encouragement to stick with the course and make the most of their abilities.
